Sandy Liang Resort 2024
Known for her downtown cool aesthetic, Sandy Liang took a detour for her resort collection, setting her sights on the polished and decadent style of the Upper East Side. Exploring the neighborhood’s penchant for cohesive and put-together outfits, Liang ventured beyond her usual downtown state of mind.
An interesting observation emerges as Liang recognizes the conscious effort of uptown women to create cohesive looks, with stereotypical skirt suits and perfectly matched accessories. However, Liang also embraces the concept of “pre-styled” clothing, aiming to alleviate the mental load of styling. In her fall collection, she introduced bows and collars as finishing touches, eliminating the need for additional accessories. This resonated well with wholesale clients, prompting Liang to continue this approach in her resort collection. Wearable examples include sailor tops adorned with collars and tonal rosettes, as well as knee-length dresses with pleated skirts, bows, and capelets, evoking a uniform-like aesthetic.
While Liang’s spirited and affordable accessories have garnered significant popularity (cue the ballet flats), the dresses themselves require no additional embellishment. However, that doesn’t stop fashion enthusiasts from experimenting with floor-scraping bows, fuzzy white bonnets, or arm warmers as personal statement pieces.
This collection bears a prominent ballet theme, evident in the pink-and-cream tweed, printed tops featuring swans gliding on blue lakes, and the presence of pleats and bows reminiscent of The Nutcracker holiday productions. Yet, as always, Liang infuses rebellious elements into her designs. Teensy pleated skirts with eyelet panels in the back, super-cropped knits, and strategically placed cutouts challenge the wearer to embrace a free-spirited attitude, inviting them to either free the nipple or flaunt a bra worth exposing.
With her resort collection, Sandy Liang seamlessly blends the sophisticated charm of the Upper East Side with her signature downtown spirit, offering a rebellious twist to refined style.
