Rok Hwang’s latest collection made a bold statement on office attire during Paris Fashion Week. As models strutted across the concrete floor of Garage Amelot, they portrayed a unique vision of “office essentials.” Rather than adhering to traditional office dress codes, Hwang’s designs showcased a playful blend of tailored pieces and unconventional elements.

The collection embraced a half-in, half-out approach, featuring classic coats and tailored ensembles alongside provocative additions. Black leather bustiers, bras, and lingerie were liberally incorporated, challenging the idea of corporate fashion norms. Hwang’s dissent from traditional office rules was evident, as his creations exuded a rebellious spirit.

However, the collection’s unconventional appearance was rooted in Hwang’s personal work process. Inspired by his own life spent in the office, meticulously pattern-cutting and draping, Hwang named the collection “Office Essentials.” He humorously acknowledged his “boring” existence centered around the atelier or office.

This perspective adds a new dimension to the collection, revealing it as a diary of Hwang’s design journey. His attention to detail is evident in the folded waistbands, shirts skillfully designed to drape off one shoulder, and the illusion of doubled jeans. While at times the complexity of his work may be overwhelming, it aligns with the current trend of “gestural” fashion, where designers like Jonathan Anderson embrace skewed, falling, and glitched aesthetics to reflect the off-kilter nature of our times. Hwang’s collection captures the spirit of this movement, offering a unique perspective on office attire and pushing the boundaries of traditional fashion norms.
