Pharrell’s Debut LV SS24 Menswear Show
Pharrell Williams paid tribute to the late Virgil Abloh and brought an overwhelming sense of joy to the Louis Vuitton show in Paris. Pharrell Williams, speaking about the late legendary Virgil Abloh, set the tone for an evolution in the fashion world.
He expressed, “His spirit is still here, and now that I’m here, it’s not canceling out anything from the past. If anything, it’s just continuing to evolve.” These profound words encapsulated the essence of a transformative era unfolding in the industry.
As the Virginia choir Voice of Fire sang Pharrell’s composed song “Joy (Unspeakable),” the atmosphere was filled with anticipation. Pharrell, dressed in head-to-toe green pixelated Damier attire, walked down the gilded Damier-covered cobbles of Paris’s oldest bridge, accompanied by the resounding applause of the audience.
Louis Vuitton CEO Pietro Beccari, who appointed Pharrell Williams to succeed Virgil Abloh, acknowledged the significance of Abloh’s legacy and dedicated the show to him. Williams expressed his love and respect for Abloh, emphasizing that his presence continued to influence and evolve the creative journey. This sentiment resonated deeply with the audience.
The collection itself was a celebration of love and a demonstration of power. The show took place on the Pont Neuf, with guests arriving via Bateaux Mouches, ferried up the Seine River. Louis Vuitton had taken over the entire bridge, creating an extraordinary spectacle. The audience included a myriad of celebrities, fashion designers, and former collaborators from Pharrell’s career, forming a diverse and inclusive community.
As dusk turned into darkness, the spotlight illuminated the runway, and the show commenced. The initial looks showcased the signature Damouflage pattern, ranging from accessories to garments. Pieces like the knit jacket, duster coat, jacquard suiting, and leather bomber, all adorned with the Damouflage pattern, caught the attention of the audience. The collection transitioned from blocky checkerboard designs to more organic shapes, reminiscent of Pharrell’s previous work. The presence of a golf buggy loaded with Damier trunks emphasized Louis Vuitton’s heritage and origins.
The collection expanded to include Damier denim, trench coats, suiting, bikers, varsity jackets, and shorts, presented in multiple colorways. Witty and desirable pieces like the denim trucker and jean with Epi leather relief appeared throughout the show. Nods to past collaborations and influences, such as Kim Jones and Nigo, were subtly incorporated into the collection. Pharrell skillfully curated a collection that exuded love and showcased his own artistic journey.
The accessories stole the spotlight with their eye-catching variations. The collection presented an array of vibrant colored Keepalls, Almas, Neverfulls, and Speedys, creating an enticing visual display. The choir’s lyrics, “If we want it we can have it,” echoed through the venue, raising questions about the nature of love and consumerism. Pharrell’s perspective as an African American was evident as he highlighted the importance of ownership, considering the history of oppression.
Pharrell Williams defied expectations and embraced his position as Louis Vuitton’s artistic director with confidence and finesse. The show radiated unbridled joy, debunking any doubts surrounding his suitability for the role. It was a triumphant display of love, artistry, and fashion that left a lasting impact on the audience.
