GIVENCHY SS24 MENSWEAR
In the captivating ambiance of the Musée de l’Armée at the Hotel National des Invalides, Matthew M. Williams presented his latest creation for Givenchy. As the audience entered the vaulted loggia surrounding the courtyard, their attention was immediately drawn to a monumental statue of Napoleon Bonaparte. The iconic silhouette of the French leader, with his bicorn hat and oversized redingote, set the tone for a memorable fashion experience.
Williams, amidst a highly anticipated moment in his Givenchy tenure, aimed to showcase his design prowess. The collection unfolded as a captivating fusion of two contrasting expressions of tailoring. The opening series featured relaxed silhouettes, with wide and soft-shouldered double-breasted jackets paired with loose, boxy trousers in luxurious silk fabrics. The show culminated in a spectacular display of precision-cut sleeveless jumpsuits and evening suits, meticulously crafted with no side seams—a testament to the atelier’s artistry.
An Eisenhower suit, paying homage to the Supreme Commander of the Allied Forces, bridged the two tailoring expressions. It served as a reminder of the power of leadership, resonating with Napoleon’s inspiring maxims. Throughout the collection, Williams seamlessly combined average, everyday garments with his distinct design approach. Oversized field jackets in grainy lamb leather, perforated leather zip-up track tops, and innovative takes on classic shirts and bombers showcased his ability to transform foundational menswear pieces into extraordinary fashion statements.
Williams’s attention to detail was evident in the subtle yet impactful modifications made to each garment. Oversized harringtons, cropped MA-1 bombers, and extended body check shirts offered a fresh perspective on familiar designs. Notably, a standout olive and bark brown storm jacket, adorned with gleaming labrets, captivated the audience, leaving a lasting impression.
While the collection exuded a sense of maturity, there was also an element of playfulness. Williams acknowledged the influence of his conversations with his teenage son, resulting in a harmonious interplay between grown-up sophistication and youthful spirit. The garments resonated with both younger individuals seeking a more mature appearance and adults yearning for a touch of youthful exuberance.
In terms of accessories, the collection featured a departure from conventional bags, with only two handheld options. Instead, functional harnessing arrangements showcased a creative and decorative approach to carrying essentials. The footwear selection introduced a new low-profile sneaker with a padded, soft upper, reminiscent of a ballet slipper, and elongated-toe loafers inspired by vintage Japanese styles, humorously referred to as “Cockroach Killers” due to their low-to-the-ground profile.
With each stride, Williams continues to push the boundaries of fashion with his Givenchy creations. This latest collection seamlessly blended tailoring with innovation, leaving a distinct impression of his design acumen and the brand’s evolving identity.
