DION LEE FW23
On this edition of FWC Mag’s Throwback Fashion we’re looking at Dion Lee FW23 and let us recap because Dion Lee knows how to make an entrance. His high-octane runway show was held in a vacant loft in downtown Manhattan filled with anticipation and lots of sexy outfits! Dion Lee has established himself as a prominent figure in New York’s party scene, and his latest collection only reinforces his reputation. Hailing from Australia, the designer has carved out a niche for himself by creating luxury rave wear that exudes sexiness and allure. This season, his fall collection reached its pinnacle, showcasing Lee’s precise cuts and the perfect balance between revealing and just enough coverage.
Slinky dresses, barely-there tank tops, mini skirts, and cropped tops dominated the runway, reflecting Lee’s meticulous attention to detail and his ability to accentuate the wearer’s body. The collection went beyond mere “going out” staples, presenting a comprehensive wardrobe that felt slightly more refined and grown-up while maintaining the signature edge that has made Lee a favorite among celebrities and fashion-forward individuals. Front-row attendees included the likes of Julia Fox, Ice Spice, and other popular influencers and stylish partygoers.
At the heart of the collection lay Lee’s exploration of a reptilian motif. On the first day of New York Fashion Week, animals took center stage in various shows, and Lee’s focus on serpent scale patterns represented the shedding of skin and transformation. Nature has always served as a wellspring of inspiration for Lee, and this season he seamlessly blended it with his industrial designs. From rhombus-shaped eyelet belting to wide-gauge knits, mixed-gauge mesh, distressed ball chain details, and Japanese shibori dyeing, Lee’s material choices exemplified his ability to bring his vision to life.
Outerwear also received special attention, with potent shearling styles, corset-like puffer jackets, and translucent inflatable jackets making a bold statement. Lee limited his tailoring to a selection of sharply cut wide-shouldered jackets, while distressed denim and ripped hosiery dresses added an intriguing touch that hinted at future possibilities, especially in menswear. One standout element was Lee’s application of boning in horizontal stacks, creating both drape and structure, which could be further explored in his future designs.
As the runway show came to a close, the crowd eagerly transitioned to Lee’s after-party, headlined by rapper Azealia Banks. Dion Lee’s electrifying collection and its celebration of seductive style left guests craving more, solidifying his status as a go-to designer for those who embrace the fusion of fashion and nightlife.
