During a recent visit to Madrid, designer Nicky Zimmermann stumbled upon a captivating sight—an impromptu dance gathering in the streets. Reflecting on the experience, she noted, “That would never happen in Australia, and it was beautiful.” This encounter, combined with a similar scene in Paris, became the muse for Zimmermann’s resort 2024 collection. She discovered remarkable photographs capturing the energy and exuberance of people at local dance halls in the 1950s, and this nostalgic charm served as the foundation for her designs.

In a tasteful approach, Zimmermann masterfully captured the essence of a 1950s dance without resorting to clichés like poodle skirts and saddle oxfords. Long, bouncy A-line skirts, vibrant floral and bandana prints, and short-sleeve blouses with permanently rolled sleeves epitomized the era. The collection opened with a dress featuring a fitted bodice and barrel skirt, accentuated by trim pointy-toe flats. A significant portion of the pieces utilized semi-sheer silk linen organza, infusing femininity and structure with an airy lightness.

While Zimmermann is known for her lavish embellishments, this season showcased a more restrained approach that proved highly successful. The challenge with the 1950s aesthetic lies in avoiding a costume-like appearance, and Zimmermann expertly navigated this territory. A plaid crop top matched with a body-hugging pencil skirt and a velvet duck-yellow slip adorned with a beaded and diamanté neckline struck a perfect balance.

As the look book progressed, it ventured into New Year’s Eve party territory. A mauve tuxedo with contrasting black details, structured strapless tops, and a white miniskirt paired with a cropped blazer emerged, adding a touch of celebratory flair. While these pieces deviated from the overall theme of the collection, they fulfilled the diverse needs of resort wear.
